Glass Actors
Wed 04 Mar 2009 12:27:59 PM MSTMy first series of punch card prints. The punch cards are courtesy of my grandfather, Murray Berg. He was a programmer for Standard Oil back in the day, and they still used cards as input for large mainframe computers. I was able to procure a carton of blank cards from him, which I then used for some prints. Conceptually this was a pretty loose series, just vacuum tubes standing in for people or symbols. I think this was my first use of vacuum tubes as subject matter.
Well I Do Believe In Your Hexagram
My second series of punch card prints. This time there's a much more consistent theme: Yi Jing hexagrams constructed with vacuum tubes. All prints are 4-run photoplate lithos with a 5th layer in stone (the Chinese title). I experimented a bit with production efficiency for these prints, and ended up doing some 11-hour stints at the press, and nearly lost it.
